With Bomberg and the Borough Group

in 1946, Richmond joined classes at the Borough Polytechnic in south London taught by David Bomberg, one of the most innovative and iconoclastic teachers of the postwar era.

Bomberg, who, by this point, had seen trench warfare, nascent Zionism, the Blitz, and the dawn of the atomic age now believed it was not only his duty to keep pursuing the distinction between form and energy - “the spirit in the mass” - in his own work, he had to teach the next generation of artists to do so as well.
